How much could really go wrong on an older model? Say, a 1993 for instance..

Kinja'd!!!

This is the best pic I’ve received. It runs and drives, has a title and is $1500.

I’m considering checking it out this weekend. The only issue is that the seller is a typical CL seller. Communication is sporadic at best.

not as much as with the ‘87 I looked at and he wanted $6k for that oily clump of rust. Look for rust.

Hammerhead and his Slee link will tell you everything you need to know, but I’ll give you my two cents based on owning a ‘92 (same color!). Small stuff (and not-so-small stuff) goes wrong all the time, but it’s mostly relatively easy to fix, or at least inexpensive. They’re so tough that none of that small stuff is likely to actually prevent it from working just fine. Perfect for a cheap old truck.

Looks like an 80. These are tough trucks. Solid axles. Many have locking diffs. They are very hard to kill and easy to work on. You should know, however, that they are slow, heavy and get terrible gas mileage. Really terrible. Like worse city milage than a V8 F150 daily-driven by a late-for-everything maniac. Like worse than 12. I know this for reasons I will not go in to. That said, if you want to take a stock truck from Alaska to Tierra Del Fuego by way of Zimbabwe (yes I know) these will do it for you and might never have a mechanical issue.

If you are just using it to do a 30 minute commute on the highway and value things like 50-90 acceleration times, these are not for you. Resale values are crazy good though.

Anything you want to know about them can best be found in the FZJ-80 forums of IH8mud.com
